FAQ

The things people ask most, split by whether you are here to shop or here to sell.

For shoppers

What’s the difference between Nerdvana and The Collector’s Stand?

They are two sides of the same store, in the same building, with one shared checkout counter.

Nerdvana is our own shop floor. We buy that inventory, we price it, and it belongs to us. The Collector’s Stand is the booth hall, where independent collectors rent space from us and sell their own inventory through our register.

Nerdvana is a DBA of The Collector’s Stand — same owners, same business, two names for the two halves.

What exactly do you sell?

Retro and vintage collectibles: the toys, comics, games, cards, records and memorabilia most of us grew up with. Think antique mall, but focused entirely on that world instead of furniture and glassware.

Who sets the prices?

Depends which side of the store it came from. Nerdvana items are ours, so talk to us directly. Booth items are priced by the vendor who owns them — our staff at the counter cannot discount somebody else’s merchandise, but if you want to make an offer, tell us and we will pass it along.

Do I pay each booth separately?

No. Everything rings up at one register at the front of the store, no matter how many different booths you pulled items from or whether some of it came off our own shelves.

Do you buy collections?

Absolutely. We love buying full collections or individual items for the Nerdvana side of the store. Bring it by during store hours, or call us at 858-744-2561 first if it is large or you would rather send photos ahead of time.

If you would rather sell it yourself and keep more of what it brings in, ask about renting a booth at The Collector’s Stand instead — sometimes that is the better deal for you.

How often does inventory change?

Constantly. Dozens of independent sellers restock on their own schedules, so the floor shifts week to week. Regulars tend to stop in often for exactly that reason.

For vendors

What does it cost to rent a booth?

Floor space is $5 per square foot per month, or $8 per square foot for the premium street-facing spaces up front. A locking display case is a flat $100 a month. On top of the rent, the store keeps 10% of what actually sells.

That is the entire fee structure — no listing fees, no per-item fees, no surprise deductions. There is a calculator on the booths and pricing page if you want to price out a specific footprint.

Do I have to deal with sales tax?

No. We collect sales tax at our register on every transaction, and we handle the filings and remittance to the California Department of Tax and Fee Administration. You do not file returns for anything sold in our store, and you never look up a district rate.

Your own income taxes, and anything you sell outside our store, are still yours to manage — your accountant is the right person for those.

How long am I committed for?

Agreements run month to month with 30 days’ notice to end them. Plenty of vendors start with a single small space for a season to see how it goes.

How do I list my items?

You get a login to your own vendor portal. Add items one at a time, or upload a spreadsheet if you are bringing in hundreds at once. Each item gets a description and your price.

How do labels work?

Once your items are in the portal, it generates a barcode label for each one. You print them, stick them on your items, and put them on the shelf. When one scans at our register, it comes off your inventory automatically.

When do I see my sales?

Immediately. Sales post to your running log the moment they ring up at the counter, so you can watch a busy Saturday happen in real time from anywhere.

How and when do I get paid?

Every week. We deduct our 10% commission and send the remaining 90% by ACH direct deposit to the bank account on file for your booth. No paper checks, no pickup required, no waiting a month to see your money.

Do I have to work shifts in the store?

Never. That is the whole point. Our employees staff the floor and the register every single day we are open. You come in only when you want to restock or rearrange.

Can I restock whenever I want?

Yes — any time during normal store hours. Most vendors swing by once a week or so to top off their space.

What can’t I sell?

Nothing illegal. Beyond that, The Collector’s Stand reserves the right to refuse to have any item for sale for any reason, in case a circumstance arises that we determine would be detrimental to the business or to our vendors.

Who is responsible if something is stolen or damaged?

We have 24-hour surveillance with a camera over every booth. If something is stolen, we will work with you to pull footage of the event. We also have employees live-viewing the cameras at random times in order to catch theft as it is happening.

There are secured cases available as well, which we unlock for customers — a good option for items that are easy to walk off with.

We take security very seriously, but at the end of the day there is always risk in this business environment. All vendors should carry their own insurance policy for theft and damage in case of loss.
